Star-scape#2. 2015. Gouache and cotton embroidery on paper.
My work was shortlisted for the 2015 Banyule Award for Works on Paper! This years theme is Space.
Here is my artist statement about the work:
Imbedded within Star-scape #2 is an embroidered rendering of Oxytocin, the chemical
linked with bonding, attachment and feelings of love.
By representing
Oxytocin as a constellation, Hanlon evokes the romance, mythology and metaphor afforded
the night sky in expressing sentiments about how we connect, our history and
our subjective understandings of our interconnectedness though-out space and time.
It also pays homage to Carl Sagan’s understanding that we’re “starstuff
pondering the stars”. Every chemical that exists was expelled from a collapsing
star, our bodies and our biochemistry; all of the physical and emotional bonds
we have, at the outset, were formed in Space.
The Banyule Award opens on on Tuesday 13th of October, 6-9pm at Hatch Contemporary Art Space.
You can also see this work and many other at Stockroom, Kyneton. My exhibition Bond has been extended to Sunday 4th October.
